Mopa International Airport also know as Mopa Airport, due to be situated in the most nothern tip of Goa is the centre of a contraversal dilemma between the citizens and politicians of Goa. Goa already has it's own Dambolin Airport which is currently in use and belongs to the Goan's Navy. Plans are now in place for the new greenfield which is due to be operational by 2015. The Goan Government have now officially given an "in principle" approval to the civil aviation ministry to two airports in the state. Goa is devided by North and South Goa; the latter being where most of the five star hoteliers are situated and concern has grown that tourisum will suffer should Mopa Airport conspire. The Goan community and politicians have growing concerns over Mopa Airport being too close to the Maharashtra border and fear this will only benifit the rich state and not Goa.
Plans for the new Mopa Airport would be Code F or super-jumbo compatible, the exact status of the ground transport (north-south) connectively of the two airports is still up in the air. Plans are for both airports to be operational but the ministers fear this is not the case and have requested that the chief minister should get a written assurance from the Navy to the effect that the Dabolim Airport will continue to operate in the event that Mopa is commissioned."Splitting traffic between Dabolim and the new airport would impact the commercial and financial viability of both airports if a sufficient, comprehensive strategy is not developed prior to implementation of the dual airport system," said ICAO report.
